Exploring the World, Strengthening Faith, and Leading with Purpose

Seventh Grade is a year of exciting academic growth and spiritual discovery. At Holy Family, students continue to develop as independent thinkers, confident communicators, and faith-filled leaders—ready to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

What Your Child Will Learn in 7th Grade

Students are invited to deepen their personal relationship with Christ through:

  • Daily prayer and reflection
  • Twice-weekly Mass attendance
  • Study of the life and teachings of Jesus
  • Participation in service projects, leadership opportunities, and Catholic Social Teaching
  • A focus on discipleship, exploring how to live out Christ’s love in everyday life
  • Celebration of the liturgical year and sacraments

Students engage in:

  • Short stories, poems, and four+ whole-class novels, such as Refugee or Ghost
  • Deep analysis of theme, character development, plot, and historical context
  • Vocabulary development across fiction and nonfiction texts
  • Comparing fictional portrayals with historical records

Writing instruction emphasizes:

  • Research-based informational and argumentative writing
  • Narrative writing that focuses on plot, character, and theme
  • Grammar and conventions embedded in real writing experiences
  • Enhancing variety, precision, and fluency in written expression

All 7th graders take Pre-Algebra, preparing them for Algebra and higher-level math. Key areas include:

  • Expressions, equations, and inequalities
  • Percents, proportions, and ratios
  • Geometry: angle relationships, similarity, and congruence
  • Introduction to probability and statistics
  • Data analysis and mathematical modeling

Students take an immersive journey through the Eastern Hemisphere, studying:

  • Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands
  • Ancient civilizations, cultural growth, and world religions
  • Geography, map skills, and the development of civilizations
    Learning is hands-on with projects, interactive notebooks, and visual mapping exercises.

Seventh Grade students study Life, Earth, and Physical Science, with a deeper focus on Earth systems. Units include:

  • Cell biology and reproduction
  • Earth structure, plate tectonics, and rock classification
  • Laws of motion, energy transfer, and heat
  • Group and individual science labs throughout the year
  • Emphasis on critical thinking and scientific inquiry

Students enjoy a variety of enrichment classes, including:

  • Music, Art, Spanish, Computer Science, and Physical Education
  • Computer Science includes coding and website building

7th Grade Highlights

  • 21st Century Learning: Daily use of Chromebooks, Google Classroom, Sonic ViewBoard, and interactive tech tools
  • Kairos Leadership Team: Students co-lead peer groups rooted in faith and discipleship
  • Academic Olympics: A chance to showcase academic strengths and team spirit
  • 7th Grade Retreat: A full-day retreat focused on leadership, sacraments, friendship, and personal faith
  • Field Trip to Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp: An overnight retreat centered on bonding, teamwork, and encountering Christ

Meet Our 7th Grade Teachers

Mrs. Libby Wright

Teacher

With a Master’s in Instructional Design and Educational Technology, Mrs. Wright is a dynamic and engaging teacher licensed in social studies, middle school math, and computer science. She is a 2019 recipient of the Archdiocese Excellence in Education Award and is passionate about helping students become lifelong learners and compassionate leaders.

Mrs. Paula McCartin

Teacher

Mrs. McCartin holds degrees from Purdue and Spalding and brings a wealth of experience and warmth to her classroom. She’s passionate about reading, traveling, and helping students thrive both academically and spiritually.
