Stepping into Middle School with Faith, Curiosity, and Confidence
Sixth Grade at Holy Family marks the beginning of middle school and the next stage of growth in students’ academic and spiritual lives. Our 6th graders take on more independence, develop leadership skills, and deepen their understanding of the world through inquiry-based learning, meaningful service, and active participation in their faith.

What Your Child Will Learn in Sixth Grade
Students journey through the Old Testament, learning about:
- The Patriarchs of our Faith
- God’s covenant and how Jesus fulfills His promise
- The call to discipleship and becoming active members of the Church
Faith is nurtured through:
- Twice-weekly Mass
- Daily classroom prayer
- A grade-wide service project and individual service opportunities
- Scripture exploration and discussion
Reading instruction in 6th Grade is built around:
- Novel studies including Tuck Everlasting, Ghost, Hidden Figures, Restart, Refugee, and Who Killed Darius Drake
- Comprehension skills such as inference, summarization, theme, and character development
- Vocabulary acquisition from both fiction and nonfiction texts
- Daily discussion and writing connected to text
Writing is powered by the Middle School Amplify ELA curriculum, where students:
- Read across genres—from Greek myths to memoirs, mysteries, and historical nonfiction
- Write analytical, narrative, and argumentative pieces
- Build confidence in public speaking and written expression
- Develop grammar and composition skills
Sixth Grade Math builds a solid foundation for higher-level coursework.
Key focus areas include:
- Number sense, decimals, fractions, and percentages
- Ratio, computation, and basic algebra
- Geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics
- Real-world application through problem-solving and skill mastery
The curriculum provides incremental review and personalized pacing for individual learners.
Students explore Western civilizations, with special focus on:
- Geography and map skills
- Ancient cultures of Europe, Central and South America
- The building blocks of civilizations
- Hands-on learning through interactive notebooks and project-based learning
Sixth Grade Science explores Life, Earth, and Physical Science, with an emphasis on Earth & Space.
Students investigate:
- The Scientific Method through a school-wide Science Fair
- Ecosystems, biomes, and community populations
- Motion, speed, velocity, and energy transformations
- The Sun-Earth-Moon system, space exploration, and the solar system
Group and individual science labs develop critical thinking and real-world application.
Students participate in a variety of enrichment classes:
- Music, Art, Spanish, Computer, and Physical Education
- Integration of technology via Google Classroom, Chromebooks, and Sonic ViewBoard
6th Grade Highlights
- 21st-Century Learning: Students use tech daily for interactive lessons and collaboration
- Science Fair: Develop, present, and compete with original science projects
- CYO Overnight Field Trip: Build teamwork, faith, and lifelong memories
- Athletics: Basketball, football, cheerleading, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, track & field, cross country, and softball.

Mrs. Lydia Edelen
TeacherWith over a decade of teaching experience, Mrs. Edelen brings passion for student achievement and data-driven instruction. Her diverse classroom background—from Kindergarten to 3rd Grade—makes her a dynamic and thoughtful middle school educator.

Mr. H Lucas
TeacherA former radio and TV broadcaster turned teacher, Mr. Lucas has been inspiring students since 2015. He brings creativity, humor, and real-world insight to the classroom. He’s a proud Steelers fan, guitar player, and IU enthusiast.
