Fifth Grade is a powerful year of academic growth and personal development. At Holy Family School, our 5th Grade students take on more responsibility and independence as they strengthen their foundation in core subjects and their Catholic faith. Through hands-on projects, rich literature, and spiritual formation, students are challenged to think critically, act compassionately, and lead by example.

What Your Child Will Learn in Fifth Grade

Faith formation continues with an emphasis on:

  • Deepening understanding of all Seven Sacraments
  • Exploring Jesus’s lineage, beginning with Abraham
  • Participating in a Saint Research Project, where students present their chosen saint in a written and oral schoolwide speech
  • Daily prayer and reflection, as well as attending Mass twice weekly

Our First Grade reading program builds strong literacy foundations using:Using the CKLA Amplify curriculum, Fifth Grade students experience an engaging blend of literature, history, science, and skill-building.

Students explore:

  • Classic novels, poetry, and nonfiction texts
  • Early American civilizations, the Renaissance, and the American Revolution
  • Topics in astronomy, the human body, and more
    Reading instruction focuses on comprehension, vocabulary, and analysis—while writing is woven throughout every unit.

Students sharpen their writing skills across four major genres:

  • Narrative writing with strong character development
  • Informative writing that organizes ideas clearly
  • Persuasive writing supported by logic and evidence
  • Research projects, including the annual Saint In-Character Speech, combining historical research with oral presentation
    Students also review grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure regularly.

First Graders build strong number sense and fluency using standards-aligned instruction:Aligned with Indiana State Standards, the math curriculum grows with each student’s individual learning pace through adaptive online tools.

Students master:

  • Multi-digit computation and number sense
  • Fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Algebraic thinking and problem solving
  • Geometry and measurement
  • Data collection and interpretation
  • Concepts are reinforced with bi-weekly STEM challenges that apply math in real-world scenarios

Fifth Grade students study the history and geography of the United States, including:

  • Founding and development of the U.S.
  • Government structure and civic responsibilities
  • Geography, culture, and economics of various regions
  • Current events and their connection to historical roots

In alignment with Indiana Science Standards, units include:

  • Earth & Space Science: solar system, daily cycles, and earth systems
  • Life Science: Indiana organisms, environmental protection, and ecosystems
  • Physical Science: volume, mass, weight, and the Law of Conservation of Mass
  • Engineering Design: students identify a real-world problem and propose an improved solution using scientific reasoning
    Bi-weekly STEM activities deepen critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills.

Students enjoy a full enrichment rotation, including:

  • Art, Music, Spanish, Computer, and Physical Education
  • Google Classroom for assignments and collaboration
  • Sonic ViewBoard and Chromebooks for tech-integrated learning

5th Grade Highlights

  • 21st-Century Learning: Seamless integration of Google tools, Chromebooks, and digital platforms
  • STEM Activities: Bi-weekly engineering and design challenges that connect learning across subjects

A proud graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, Miss Strahm is passionate about nurturing confidence, independence, and academic achievement. She focuses on building strong relationships with her students while helping them grow spiritually and intellectually. She enjoys being outdoors, spending time with loved ones, and baking new recipes!
