Feb. 19th Criterion Article about the concert during Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools Week at Holy Family School
The recent winter storm brought much of Indiana to a standstill, but it didn’t stop a special Catholic Schools Week performance at Holy Family School in New Albany.
Lori True, Campus Minister for Liturgy and Music at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN, was able to fly to Louisville and drive across the river to New Albany, which was south of the winter weather. However, her piano accompanist was stuck in Indianapolis. True called a friend in Atlanta, Paul Tate, also a recording artist, who flew up on short notice for the program, which coordinated with the yearly theme for Holy Family School. Both Ms. True and Mr. Tate have recorded numerous songs through GIA Publications.
Each year, the Holy Family faculty develops a theme for the school year, and this theme weaves itself among the many activities, liturgies, and events of the school year, and aligns with our Catholic faith. Each year a song is chosen that provides celebration, reflection and reinforcement through music, the universal language of love and fellowship. Last year’s theme song, Come and Follow Me was written and recorded by Tom Franzak, of Pittsburgh, also a friend of Ms. True.
The 2010-2011 school-year theme, A Place at the Table was composed and performed by True. The song was used during Mass, and afterward, True, who is also Associate Director of “Music Ministry Alive!” gave the students a musical lesson for life in Christ.
“You have a lot of voices telling you what to do,” said True. “You have a decision to make as to which voice you listen to. Listen to God.”
Students then sang their way with True through life lessons that apply to adults as well. Where do we go to solve a problem? “Wisdom,” True replied. “When we think we have all the knowledge, wisdom, open our hearts!”
True’s message included reminders to keep practicing, that God is always with us, and that whenever something is bothersome, remember to let it go because “God’s got a plan, and it’s bigger than this!”
Principal Jerry Ernstberger was relieved that the weather did not affect southern Indiana so that the festivities could go forward as planned. “I am amazed at the graciousness of Ms. True, Mr. Tate, and Mr. Franzak who came last year. Despite being leading composers and recording artists in religious music today, all I had to do was ask, and they readily made time in their schedule for us.”
“There was a lot about social justice” in True’s songs, said Ernstberger. “We focus on ourselves as children. As we grow older, we see a lot of people who have needs and we learn to reach out. We parents and teachers work daily to teach children to think of others.”
The message of this year’s theme and theme song, A Place at the Table, is, according to Ernstberger, a way to give children the lesson of reaching out in a way that is familiar to all of them. “If we are always looking for people to have a place at our table, at God’s table, then we are answering God’s call.”
True appreciated Holy Family’s organization of the program around the table theme and commented that these are wonderful ways to celebrate what we do in the Catholic Church.
“The Church needs to stay singing and not just to listen because so much around the children tells them to just listen. Let them sing!”
Ernstberger is already pondering next year’s theme and guest artist…
